Assistant Professor in Art History, One-Year Term, Art History and Museum Studies Programs

Job Summary:
The Art History & Museum Studies programs at the University of San Francisco invite applicants for a one-year non-renewable term Assistant Professor in Art History to begin August 2023, contingent upon funding approval. The teaching load is based on a 0.8 FTE term position assignment of 24 units teaching per academic year (typically three 4-unit courses per semester), which will include two sections of the first half of the Western Art History Survey (Ancient-Medieval) in the fall semester. Additional teaching assignments will depend on the successful candidate's area(s) of specialization, and may include a seminar addressing issues of cultural heritage and preservation for our MA in Museum Studies program. The field of specialization is open, though we seek applicants who are conversant with the global intersections of art. Preferred candidates will have the proven ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: Survey of Western Art History II (Renaissance-Contemporary), Islamic Art, Asian Art, or Art of the Americas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. preferred, though advanced ABD candidates will be considered. A strong record of teaching at the university level and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. Successful candidates must be able to offer their reflections on equity, and strategies for success in engaging with BIPOC students.

  • Cover letter, detailing areas of research and teaching experience and interest.

  • Curriculum vitae, including contact information for three references, at least one of whom can speak to the candidate's teaching abilities.

  • A sample syllabus for the Ancient-Medieval Western Art History survey, and

  • One additional sample syllabus.

  • Sample teaching evaluations, preferably including evaluations from lower-division survey courses.

  • A diversity statement, which may include your thoughts and/or experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation in the field, experience working on a diverse team, and/or experience working with different communication/learning styles.
