The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Library seeks a dynamic candidate for the 12-month, tenure eligible position of Manuscripts Archivist. This is a great opportunity for an early career professional interested in working in a collaborative environment that stresses community engagement, experiential learning, open pedagogy, and a standards-based approach to curation.

The Library conscientiously invests in user-centered services, collections, and technologies to serve a broad diversity of identities, lived experiences, and viewpoints through collaboration, transparency, and respect. The Library maintains a personnel of twenty-six faculty librarians and eighteen and a half staff members, operates on an annual budget of over four million dollars, and possesses collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 150 databases, and more than 28,000 accessible online journals. The Library provides an information commons with 125+ public computers, thirty-eight group study rooms, a media studio, three library instruction classrooms, a writing center, an archival repository, a cafe, and a 24-hour study space in a five-story 180,000-square-foot facility constructed in 2015.

Reporting to the Head of Collections Services and working closely with the Director of Special Collections, the Manuscripts Archivist is responsible for the management of Manuscripts and the Chattanooga History Collections housed in the Library's Special Collections. The Manuscripts Archivist accomplishes the following:
  • Plans and oversees the acquisition, processing, description, storage, preservation, exhibition, digitization, and stewardship of materials that document the cultural heritage of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and the Tennessee Valley;
  • Contributes to the creation of policies, procedures, workflows, and standards compliance in archival description and digital projects, and implements technologies and strategies to support these activities by collaborating with stakeholders;
  • Teaches instruction sessions and designs assignment-based open pedagogy projects such as building lesson plans, curating exhibitions, and recording oral histories;
  • Interacts with donors, appraises potential collection additions, and makes recommendations for the acquisition of new collections, paying close attention to legal and privacy issues involved in the transfer of materials;
  • Contributes to reference services by assisting patrons in person, on the phone, by email, and via web conference;
  • Designs and manages projects for student assistants, interns, and volunteers, including processing, archival and digital object description, and metadata remediation projects;
  • Actively participates in Special Collections and Library meetings, future visions, collaborative goal setting, and assessment;
  • Participates in planning, shared governance, and Library- and University-wide faculty activities;
  • Conducts research, produces scholarship, and serves the profession as consistent with a tenure-track appointment;
  • And engages in continuing professional development.
