Job Description:
The School of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is excited to invite applications for a Professor of Practice to join our innovative and professionally-oriented program in Museum Studies. We seek an experienced colleague who brings practical museum-based skills, such as collections management, installation and design, public programming, curatorship, and/or interpretation, along with a scholarly interest in the history and theory of museums. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching Museum Studies courses as assigned, assisting in the recruitment and advising of master's students, and actively participating in the life of a dynamic program. Some teaching experience is desirable, and professional museum experience is required.

The Graduate Program in Museum Studies is one of the oldest and most highly regarded Museum Studies Programs in the U.S., offering a 2-year M.A. degree, a growing undergraduate minor, and strong curricular relationships with Art History, Anthropology, Art, History, and Library Science. Our curriculum focuses on research, hands-on practice, curatorship, and design. Graduates of the program are prepared to pursue a wide range of positions in different types of museums and other non-profits in the cultural field. The faculty and staff of the program are devoted to educating and training students to be resilient, creative, and highly qualified professionals, capable of exceptional performance in diverse working environments.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in museum, cultural heritage and/or related field


Job Specific Qualifications:
  • MA/MFA/Ph.D. degree in a relevant subject desirable, though not required depending on professional experience
  • Teaching experience in a college or university setting with demonstrated ability and commitment to innovative experiential learning is desirable.
  • A record of involvement with national and/or international museum, professional and/or scholarly organizations is encouraged


Responsibilities:
  • Delivery of existing curriculum as well as the development of new engaging courses in Museum Studies, emphasizing hands-on learning experiences for general practice.
  • Inspire students to develop a deep understanding of the many facets of museum practice, including (but not limited to) collections management, exhibition design, digital preservation, non-profit administration, and visitor engagement.
  • Provide academic and career advising to students pursuing internships and full-time positions in a range of disciplines and institutions (e.g., various roles in museums of art, history, science, technology, etc.)
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of the programs curriculum, integrating real-world case studies, internships, immersive projects and contemporary practice.
  • Develop and support relevant programmatic initiatives, including community collaborations, exhibitions, field trips, lecture series, recruitment initiatives, and projects that enhance the curriculum.
